City College of New York – Stanley H. Kaplan Institute for the Advancement of Math Education

Overview: In response to falling math scores across the U.S., Stanley returned to his alma mater to create the Stanley H. Kaplan Institute for the Advancement of Math Education in 2003. The goal of the Institute was to improve mathematics instruction and instructional leadership in New York City’s public schools, with the ultimate goal of increasing student achievement. The Foundation made an 8-year pledge to CCNY to train middle school math instructors and assistant principals via one-on-one mentorships and daylong professional development sessions. These mentorships and training led to marked improvements in teaching quality and student achievement.
